Now hosting on Linode with Pebble!

I’m now hosting my blog on my own Linode which is basically a hosted Unix service where you have root access. Fantastic stuff. I’ve installed my own DNS and mail servers, an instance of Tomcat, my wiki (a JSPWiki) and now some new Java blogging software – Pebble. If you’re looking for Java hosting … and don’t mind getting dirty with a little Linux, you can’t do better than root access! Ultimate flexibility.

Now, the only thing left to do is port my old MoveableType content over to Pebble, which I’ll get around to over the next week or so. Or let me know if anyone’s written a script to do the same.

I’ve gotta say that Pebble looks very neat. It’s got all the features I need in a blog, is 100% Java, and it’s well documented. Installation was a 5 minute process (and that’s the multi-user version – cause Nick will be here soon too). Fantastic stuff.

  • Hello Glen,

How much RAM did you get with your Linode account? (They offer 64M, 128M, etc.)

I once had a virtual BSD host, and it was great for running services written in Lisp or Smalltalk, but I could not run Tomcat due to memory limitations.

  • Mark, I went for the minimum option. $USD20/month for 64Mb of RAM and a couple of gig of disk. I setup Debian with 512 MB of swap, but everything else was pretty vanilla.

I’m only really running Tomcat, MySQL, DNS and mail, so maybe that’s why I’ve got space. Or maybe they’ve just upgraded their services lately. Anyways, things seem pretty responsive from the shell. We’ll see how it goes over time.

  • Hi Glen,
We’re using Linode as well, but noticing that the JVM that Tomcat runs in seems to grow in size with time.

Have you noticed anything, or have any strategies to reduce the amount of memory that Tomcat/JVM uses on Linode? (Are you using a special JVM, or any special configurations?)

    Thanks,
